A new chapter I’ve written is coming out in The Mother Wave, Andrea O’Reilly and Fiona Joy Green’s wonderful new anthology (Demeter Press, September 2024). My chapter, which is titled “Matricentric Art: A Philosophy of Maternal Work Through the Act of Creativity,” explores how some artists who are mothers, as well as mothers more broadly, become highly creative during motherhood, energized by their children. This contrasts both with the ideas of second wave feminists who suggest that motherhood is a career killer in opposition to feminism, and with contemporary feminists who think we should “lean in” to paid work and corporate ladders as the path to success.
