As of yet, my research has been unable to determine exact information on this image, which is a relief.  However, I have found it posted on numerous blogs and other websites.  The History Girl Blog  is probably the most reliable source I have come across, with writer Caroline Lawrence connecting the relief to Classical Athens of the 5th century BCE.

The image is very helpful in the visualization of birth.  The viewer can actually see the baby’s head emerging from its mother’s vulva.  The woman is depicted in the squatting position, a position frequently discussed here and elsewhere as one of the optimal ways in which a woman can use gravity to aid her as she gives birth.  Additionally, the mother appears to be focused and calm as four female attendants aid her in the birthing process.
