Catalan Art about Birth and Identity

This past weekend, I presented the presidential address for the American Academy of Religion, Western Region (AAR/WR). As part of the address, I made this video, which focuses on Catalan art about birth and its relationship to cultural identity connected to the concept of rebirth.

The video includes numerous images of birth, many of which are helpful in the visualization of birth more broadly. There are five main artists represented. These include : Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), Joan Miró (1893-1983), Mari Chordà (b.1942), Xicu Cabanyes (b.1946) and Eugènia Balcells (b.1942).

Visualizing Birth has previously discussed the artwork of Xicu Cabanyes. See: The Table of Pregnant Women and Xicu Cabanyes’ Pregnant woman and the Can Ginebreda Forest
